The Ihu Special Economic Zone management continues to support UPNG Gulf students in their end of year program
ISEZ Management has assisted UPNG Gulf students with almost K27,000 to carry out awareness throughout Kikori District during their school holidays.
The money will be used to cater for their needs throughout the awareness. This will include, purchasing water containers for people in the village, vehicle hire, dingy hire, fuel, food, allowances and so on.
The awareness will be carried out for one week that will include two separate sections. Firstly, will be the students own program, which is to donate goods and also speak to the people, motivate and educate them on various social topics. The other section is about ISEZ project and its progress. Both will run simultaneously throughout the week.
The students will talk to locals about health and safety (topics on malaria and typhoid), drugs and alcohol, women empowerment, effects of young relationships, education and generally doing motivational speeches to the people, especially to the young ones. While also, large 1000L containers and treated mosquito nets (provided by Dep. of Health) will be given to these different schools and communities that they will be visiting, which are:
Don Bosco Araimiri Secondary/ Akapiru (West kouri),
Ihu High School/Ihu Station,
Hareava Harevavo Primary school /Hareava Harevavo,
Mareke and
Baimuru Primary School/ Baimuru station/Apiope
ISEZ awareness will also be covered by the students. Key topics will be on the ISEZ project itself, then the different components in the project, such as, SME programs, Land Partnership and Technical infrastructure. Basically, the students will remind and educate the people on the possible benefits they will get by having this project on their doorstep, the advantages of doing SMEs, why they should release their land for development, infrastructure developments that will happen on their land and just the overall opportunities ISEZ can bring to them.
ISEZ Managing Director Peter Kengemar is always on board with Gulf students when it comes to assisting and helping them in their programs. In a workshop with the students at the ISEZ office yesterday, Mr. Kengemar gave a run through of the project and also spoke to them on why he will continue to support them.
“It’s a good thing to fund your activity, ISEZ office will not stop, we will continue to support you next year, the following year and onwards because you are the future leaders and you have your own way of thinking, so when you talk to the people, you talk to them in your perspectives, we don’t want to influence you. So, with your request to us, we have no hesitation to support your program,” said Mr. Kengemar.
The students also showed their appreciation to once again partner with ISEZ. With the current UPNG Gulf student’s union president Mr. Kevin Kuni from Mareke village (Ihu LLG) present in the meeting, he expressed his thoughts about the partnership and project.
“The partnership with ISEZ is very timely for us, we were faced with challenges to carry out awareness in the villages but thankfully, ISEZ has come on board to help us and we feel privileged to partner with the project office and we know we have a duty now to take lead and not only educate the people in the village but also further educate ourselves on this project and hopefully some of us Gulf students will be part of the project going forward to help change our people’s lives in the village,” said Mr. Kuni.
ISEZ management will continue to support and encourage the young generation and future leaders to take responsibility of this innovative project. It is a project that will boost the living standards of people in Kikori and also across the province.
